Tips for combing a Persian cat

Persian cat: I once fell in love with a large ginger fluff ball, or technically a red-haired Persian. He was the most affectionate, greedy, hysterically funny cat I’ve ever had. However, his grooming requirements were not nice. I was used to medium and short haired cats as pets and brushing was never a chore. So I decided to quickly raise myself, as he wasn’t particularly good at taking care of himself, although bless him, he tried.

Do not brush combs

A Persian coat is so dense that combing, not brushing, is the only option. A brush just glides over the surface, only removing dead hair from above and not getting deep enough into the coat. The hair of a Persian hair consists of top hair and can shed all year round. You should use a metal comb which should have two different lengths of teeth, one short and one long. It’s also a good idea to have two different types of combs. One with wide teeth, one with regular teeth.

The wide-toothed comb is easier to use on your cat’s knots and matted areas. Once you’ve untied the knotted coat, you can return to the original comb. Unfortunately, you may have to cut the knots out if their fur has become really tangled and matted. A cat’s skin is very thin and sensitive, so make sure you’re soft but firm.

Starting the combing procedure

Get your combs and accessories ready first. Nothing is harder than trying to persuade your cat to come back for more combing when you have to get up to find another item. It is likely that they will disappear for quite some time. Spraying your combs with Feliway Feline Spray and letting them dry before using is a great way to keep him calm and relaxed. Choose a time when your Persian has played before so that he is not too energetic. Then find a comfortable sitting area for you and your cat, don’t worry about it, just pretend you’re about to watch TV or relax in the evening. Your cat will feel calmer if he thinks this is part of your normal pattern. Your couch will probably be the best because your cat can stretch out and you have room while combing.

The next step is to move from the head down the body to the tail. Gently comb the coat in the direction of hair growth and in an upward motion, removing dead hair. Even though you have to be firm, remember that your cat’s skin is like tissue paper, be careful. The base of the tail is extremely sensitive, especially in male cats that have not been neutered. So be careful again. You should then comb the chest and abdomen. You may be lucky enough to have a cat roll onto its back and let you do this, but it’s unlikely. They are not dogs.

The armpit area also gets very gnarled so it’s best to lift their front legs and support their weight so they don’t struggle. You can then comb their underlying area. You may need to wear rubber gloves as they can claw at you with their hind legs which will be very painful. Encouraging words and praising him while he is being combed will help. If he has his favorite cat toy near him, he can be happy too. Most pet stores and pet stores carry a variety of combs for different cat breeds. Hopefully brushing your Persian cat from kittenhood will help him get used to his daily routine and make things a lot easier for both of you.

If you want to have a Persian, combing every day is necessary. They will often mattify if you don’t, which is very painful for them as it pulls on the skin over time. If you really don’t think you can handle the day-to-day work, then stick with owning short-haired cats because it’s not fair to their health to know you don’t care. Owning a Persian is a big responsibility, so be honest with yourself before thinking about adding a Persian to the family.
