Kindness of strangers

Have you ever relied on the kindness of strangers for your own personal safety? I was recently endowed with the experience of awakening in the presence of a soft, silent stranger – who said in a soft voice. It’s alright, I’ll stay with you, you’re safe!

As I started writing this part, I realized that my life was filled with experiences of the support and kindness of strangers when I needed it most. Whether it was the appearance of a Caravaggio angel who spoke English and understood cars who stopped to help us when my friend and I were stranded on the side of the autostrada in Italy, or a security guard as I lay unconscious on the floor of the US lay Post Office.

How extraordinary were these two events. The Caravaggio angel appeared, at a resting place, stepping out of a small battered car, his face framed by dark soft curls and his luminous dark eyes filled his face. He appeared as my friend and I literally completed a prayer asking for help from someone who spoke English and knew about cars Kindness of strangers. He read our Italian manual, listened to our car, advised what to do, how far to drive and where to stay to be safe.

My security guard at the post office arrived unsolicited. My last consciousness was standing in a row, in a public building. My next consciousness is lying on the floor. When my “guardian” said she would stay with me, that I was safe, I found myself controlling my inner state – I realized – I felt safe.

This sense of security came from within and without myself. Remarkably, as those around me used reassuring words and language infused with the assumptions of fear, and scary thoughts, I was aware that there was a strong, stable sense of calm, equanimity, and assurance of a positive outcome within me. used to be Kindness of strangers.

At first we looked for safety and “rescue” from the outside. The second event that took place 3 years later, the sense of security came from within and was sustained by the unsolicited but welcome presence and support of others Kindness of strangers.

What a blessing to follow the unfolding within myself of an inner sense of well-being and security Kindness of strangers. What a blessing to experience the abundance of the kindness of strangers.

What an invitation and an opportunity to experience even more gratitude and appreciation. An opportunity to publicly pay tribute and give thanks for the kindness of strangers.
